Exciting changes for the 2023 SCARPA Great Lakeland 3Day mean it’s perfect for beginners!

The 2023 SCARPA Great Lakeland 3Day is set to be our most beginner-friendly event to date!

As we gear up for the SCARPA GL3D, we are delighted to announce some exciting changes for the 2023 event, which was recently revealed to be starting in Coniston. From changes to the Café Course, a new Herdwick Course and support for those looking to gain confidence with navigation, this will be a welcoming environment for many hikers and beginner trail runners!

The Café Course is going to be even more accessible!

In a move to encourage more beginner hikers and runners to get out into the fells, the Café course you know and love is going to be more accessible than ever before!

Notably, the elevation this year is under 500m on day 1 and 3, and only ~650m on day 2. This is perfect for those who want a relaxed but highly enjoyable day out bursting at the seams with crowd-pleasing linkups through some classic low-level Lake District terrain.

The new Herdwick Course is perfect for first-time Trail Runners

The brand-new Herdwick course is likely to be particularly crowd-pleasing, with some classic summits and iconic middle-fell terrain.

The Herdwick course will be similar to the pre-2023 Café course. It will be great trail-running terrain for those still finding their feet, but can still be walked well within the course open times (if you set off at a reasonable time!) – either way it will be a hugely enjoyable leg stretching day out in the hills.

Recommended routes for the Café Course and Herdwick Course

Fancy a Lake District adventure, but don’t yet feel fully confident using a map and compass?

In 2023, we will be providing a recommended route for both the Café Course and Herdwick Course. This will be available as a GPX file that you can download to your device, and will be on display. We will also have people on hand ready to answer any questions you may have about the map or navigation.

It’s the perfect way to build your confidence finding your way on the trails and fells.

NEW for 2023 – Digital Mapping

In addition to your paper copy of the event map that you will receive at registration, for 2023 there will also be the option to download Digital Mapping via the Avenza App. This will be exactly the same as the paper map, with all the same features and checkpoints, but it will be accessible on your smart device.

You can access this via a QR code that will be printed on the Event Map or via a link that will be emailed out once registration opens. This will give you more options for navigation, and may be handy if you don’t want the faff of a large paper map. If you prefer to stick to tradition, you can of course still use the paper copy provided!

Looking for a challenge?

Don’t worry – there is still the Wainright course for the Wainright baggers out there, the Fellrunner course or the fiendishly tough Extreme Course if you’re looking to test your limits on the fells. These courses will test your navigation skills as well as your running and endurance! With 6 courses to choose from, including the Adventure Course, there is something for all abilities.
