2018 Race Director’s Report

I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the weekend. It was absolute running perfection – I may have to retire, running will never be that good again! The weather and courses were fantastic and I really enjoyed having the same camp for two days, it made the second day more relaxing
— Christine J

The 20th anniversary of the SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day™ certainly delivered with three days of perfect weather, fantastic mountain courses for all, and such a warm and welcoming atmosphere at one of the most amazing Overnight Camps we have ever had.

Last year we made a lot of changes to the event, introducing the new course structure and the idea of the big marquee at the overnight camp. This certainly seems to have been widely accepted as a big improvement for the event. In my 2017 Race Director’s Report I promised some ‘specialness’ for the 2018 event as it would be the 20th Anniversary of the original GL3D™. Apart from organising the weather, we also introduced more catering options at the Overnight Camp and kept the camp at one location this year. The atmosphere around the camp, and the feedback already received clearly shows that these were welcome updates to the event… whilst I’ll reflect on these changes carefully, my inclination is that you’ll see these become regular changes to the event format for many years to come.

STAKEHOLDER THANKS

Of course, the event would not have been possible without the consent of the major landowner, which is the National Trust, and we would like to sincerely thank them. There are many other key stakeholders in the event including many different landowners, and organisations like Wild Ennerdale. I would like to sincerely thank them for helping to make the event a hugely rewarding and enriching experience for all the participants.
